Wellbeing

Focus on good living for all

Most of what’s needed for climate action is a category of wellbeing-enhancing initiatives that can make everyday life better by upgrading how we move, heat, cool, and consume. These initiatives, many known as demand-side solutions, are worthwhile in their own right. They are also climate solutions multipliers.

The wrinkle: Americans are supportive of climate action, but many just don’t know there are meaningful, tangible benefits on the table.

There has been progress. California programs over the last fifteen years have emphasized efficient electric equipment and jobs. So did the Inflation Reduction Act before it was repealed.

Both worked, but they just scratched the surface, and the popular picture of climate action remains: Technical analysis, engine rooms, distant abstractions, and the specter of sacrifice. And without concrete links to daily lives, the issue lacks salience and draw.

Way forward

Focus efforts for large-scale climate impact on tangible value people can feel.

Offer propositions that save money and time, increase freedom and health, and help people live more joyously with less stress.

Frame upgrades and choices as improvements in comfort, convenience, and security and let those gains pull climate ambition forward.

Make the personal benefits clear in every program design, message, and partnership so the virtuous cycle of experience, advocacy, and co-investment can build.

In sum, sell practical benefits, and be accountable to delivering them.
